Going to the dentist while fasting:What is the ruling?

Maintainingdental and oral health is an important aspect of observing fasting, especiallyduring the blessed month of Ramadan. The Fatwa (religious decree) issued by theIndonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) No. 250/E/MUI-KB/V/2018 provides clearguidelines on "Dental Procedures During Fasting," which allowsMuslims to undergo dental treatment without invalidating their fast.

A healthy oralcavity not only affects physical health but also influences the comfort andperfection of fasting worship. Fasting requires special attention to nutritionand hydration, but often we overlook the importance of oral health.

  • Enjoyment of Worship: With healthy teeth and mouth, fasting worship becomes more comfortable. There are no disturbances such as toothaches or bad breath that disrupt worship and concentration.
  • General Health: Good dental and oral health also contributes to overall body health. Infections or dental problems left untreated can lead to more serious health issues.
  • Ethics and Cleanliness: Taking care of teeth and mouth is part of ethics and cleanliness in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of maintaining oral hygiene.

The Fatwa MUINo. 250/E/MUI-KB/V/2018 provides highly relevant guidance for the modern Muslimcommunity. This fatwa confirms that dental treatment, including visits to thedentist, can be done without breaking the fast.

This means thatas long as the dental procedure does not involve ingesting food or drink, thefast remains valid. Dentists can perform treatments such as teeth cleaning, root canal treatment, or other necessary procedures to maintain oral health.

Maintainingdental and oral health during fasting is not just about physical comfort butalso an integral part of complete and correct worship. The MUI Fatwa hasprovided clear explanations and support for Muslims in ensuring that they canmaintain their dental and oral health without sacrificing their fastingworship. Therefore, let us take care of our teeth and mouth so that our fastingworship becomes more comfortable and meaningful.
